ADAPT + EXTEND

EXHIBITION SPACE

The project is an extension to Saint John’s Hospital, a building dating to the 11th century nestled within the contextually sensitive City of Canterbury. The project brief described that the Archaeological Society of Canterbury needed a new building, to accommodate display spaces for their findings, a cafe, teaching spaces, storage, and overnight stay accommodation. The final design is composed of a set variety of elliptical arched ‘components’, aligned according to a logically proportioned grid. This allows for a mathematical rhythm that permeates throughout the building and embodies a transparent, open arrangement of spaces. These arches are also used to define the double-height and even triple height spaces that form vertical alignments.
